GAINESVILLE, FLA. - With winter-type temperatures and gray skies, Saturday looked nothing like spring. But regardless of the weather conditions, the University of Alabama men's golf team opened its spring season here. The Crimson Tide perhaps showed signs of a long layoff-college golf must take a respite between fall and winter because of the weather.
Alabama played 36 holes of golf in one day as the first two rounds of the University of Florida's Gator Invitational were played on Saturday. Alabama is in 12th place, shooting 301-296/597 as a team in the opening rounds. It will play the final round of 18 holes on Sunday.
Augusta State, a top five ranked team, is in first place after two rounds and shot 11 over par (280-291/571) for the day. Host Florida is second at 17 over (577), followed by Georgia Southern (579), Purdue (580), Georgia State (581), LSU (582), Charleston and Kentucky (585), Vanderbilt and Florida State (592), UAB (593), Alabama (597), North Florida (605), and Ohio State and South Florida (615).
Augusta State's Oliver Wilson takes the individual lead going into the final round. He's three under par (67-70/137) on the par 70 University of Florida Golf Course. Alabama, which shaved five strokes in the afternoon round off its first round score, was led by Lars Brovold who shot par, 70, in the morning round but then 78 in the afternoon. He is tied for 28th. Mac Butler shot 76-73/149 and is tied at 32nd. Clint Provost shot 76-75/151 and is tied at 44th. Austin Hynson is tied at 58th after shooting 79-75/153, and Daniel Creel is tied at 64th, coming back from an 81 in the morning to shot 74 in the afternoon (155).
