Tide Diver Notches Second Third Place Finish at SEC Championships

Alabama diver Lane Bassham posted the Crimson Tide's top individual finish on the second night of the 2003 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships taking third place off the one-meter board.
Bassham helped lead Alabama's women to a sixth place finish after day two with 135 points. The Tide men are in fifth place with 124 points. Auburn, the host team, stands atop both the men and the women's ranks, with 306.5 and 287.5 points respectively.
Bassham, who also took third in yesterday's three-meter diving competition, scoring 292.90 points off the one-meter to take the bronze finish. Senior Katherine Bortenlanger also scored off the one-meter, taking 15th place with 230.50 points.
Rookie Candace Weiman finaled in the 200 IM, posting a 2:01.43, good for fifth place. Juniors Anne Poleska and Catalina Casaru took first and second in the consolation finals of the 200 IM, with a 2:01.84 and 2:02.70, which put them ninth and 10th overall. Freshman Victoria Genova scored the Tide's first individual swimming points of the meet, taking 13th in the 500 freestyle with a 4:55.29.
Freshman Apostolis Tsagarakis took fifth in the 50 freestyle with a 19.94, making him only the second Alabama swimmer to go under 20 seconds in the 50. The first was school record holder and two-time United States Olympian Jon Olsen . Sophomore Spiros Bitsakis swam to a 20.21 finish in the 50, taking 10th place overall. Junior Ben Worby scored in the 200 IM, posting a 1:50.43 in finals, good for 13th place.
The championships continue Friday and conclude on Saturday.
