FT. COLLINS, Colo. - A young University of Alabama team learned a tough lesson on Friday night against a very experienced and hot shooting Boston College squad, as BC handed the Tide a 77-56 loss in the opening game of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational.
The loss drops the Crimson Tide to 1-1 on the season while Boston College remains undefeated on the year at 3-0. The victory also marked the Eagles first win over Bama in three tries.
"We played an outstanding basketball team tonight," said UA head coach Rick Moody. "Their two guards really understand the game and did a great job of just dominating play. We didn't execute very well tonight and in the second half we struggled to score. Hopefully, we can bounce back for tomorrow's game."
Boston College guard tandem of Jessalyn Deveny and Amber Jacobs finished with 43 as both players finished with over 20 points. Deveny led all scorers with 23 followed by 20 from Jacobs.
Alabama's freshman center Tamisha Hamilton scored 13 points to lead the Tide and record her first career double digit performance. Fellow freshman Navonda Moore also hit double digits finishing with 11 points.
BC used a 16-6 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to break open a competitive game. The Eagles maintained a near 20-point margin for much of the closing frame as the Tide just couldn't find an offensive flow. While UA struggled shooting at a 27.3 percent clip (9-of-33), Boston College blistered the nets in the second stanza hitting on 15-of-21 shot attempts (71.4 percent).
Turnovers also plagued the Alabama offensive as Bama committed 22 turnovers in the game including 14 miscues in the first half. UA was able to keep things close in the opening 20 minutes with a strong 52.2 percent shooting performance (12-of-23).
Boston College, who led for much of the first half, gained its largest margin of the period, 37-28, with 1:35 left. The lead was due in part to a personal nine point run over a four minute stretch by Deveny. The Eagles took a 39-30 advantage into the lockeroom at the break.
One bright spot for the Tide was their play on the glass, as Alabama won the battle of the boards, 34-33, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive end. Hamilton and Tawana Freeman led the way with five rebounds each.
The Crimson Tide plays in the consolation game of the Coors Invitational at 5 p.m. (MT) on Saturday against the loser of the Colorado State-Long Beach State game to be played later on Friday night. BC faces the winner of the second game in the tournament championship at 7: 30 p.m.
