Women's Cross Country Takes 9th at SEC Championships

Alabama finished ninth at the Southeastern Conference Women's Cross Country Championship held on the UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga. Monday (Nov. 3) morning.
"This is about where I thought it would fall," coach Steve Keith said. "They really learned what the conference was all about today. I thought if we had a great race we'd be eighth, otherwise we'd be ninth and that's where we ended up."
Tennessee won the meet with a meet low of 57 points, followed by the host Georgia Lady Bulldogs with 95 points. Five-time defending champion Arkansas took third with 103 points. Alabama totaled 230 points and finished one place better than last season.
"Tara (Enebak) ran a tough race," Keith said. "It was a hard physical race, and the conditions were somewhat challenging, but she kept passing people. That's encouraging."
The Tide was led by freshman Tara Enebak's 25th place individual finish. She clocked in at 23 minutes and 23.21 seconds. Rookie Julia Hicks was the Tide's next finisher, taking 38th with a time of 23:47.92.
Sophomore Blair Davis was 48th with a 24:11.87 while freshmen Meg Carnes and Elizabeth Wancowicz rounded out the Tide's scoring at 60 and 62nd respectively. Carnes posted a 24:45.32 while Wancowicz went 24:55.05.
"Blair was sick and still held it together well and that was nice to see," Keith said. "We'll have a couple of days to recover from this race, but I know they are looking forward to getting back out there and showing what kind of team they can be at the region meet."
Alabama returns to competition November 15 at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Auburn, Ala.
