TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama women's basketball team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich., to open the 2003-04 season against the Michigan Wolverines on Monday at 6 p.m. (ET).
The Crimson Tide, who finished last season with a 13-15 record, look to continue their season opening success that includes a current six-game win streak in season debuts. For Alabama and Michigan, Monday's game marks the first time the two storied programs have faced each other in women's basketball.
Alabama posted a 1-1 record in its exhibition games, handing Berry College a 98-66 loss before dropping a 71-60 decision to Premier Players last Tuesday night. Michigan owns a 3-1 record heading into Monday's contest. The Wolverines reached the semifinals of the preseason WNIT and also defeated in-state foe Western Michigan, 66-53, on Friday afternoon.
For the Tide, true freshman Navonda Moore has already shown flashes of excitement. Moore averaged a team-leading 16 points per game in the squad's two exhibition contests including a 22 point outing in her first collegiate game. Juniors Monique Bivins (13.0 ppg) and Katie Sipe (10.5 ppg) have also had solid preseason performances.
Following Monday night's tilt at Michigan, Alabama continues its season opening road swing with a tournament appearance in Fort Collins, Colo., next weekend. The Tide is slated to face Boston College in the opening round of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. (MT). The Tide's next home appearance comes on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. versus in-state foe Jacksonville State.
