The University of Alabama softball program has announced the signings of Demopolis native Lauren Roark and Cockeysville, Maryland native Dani Woods.
Roark, a senior at Demopolis High School verbally committed to Alabama in the fall of her sophomore year and has not missed a beat since, claiming the 4A State MVP award in her junior season while being named team captain in 2002 and 2003 as well as team MVP in 2003.
Roark helped lead Demopolis High School to the 2003 4A state championship. She was also named to the Birmingham News Class 4A-5A All-State team in 2003 as well as the Tuscaloosa News Softball Player of the Year in 2003.
“Lauren’s probably the best softball athlete in the state of Alabama this year,” said Alabama Head Coach Patrick Murphy. “She has come to our clinics since she was in the sixth grade and has really developed into a good player. She will need some time to adjust to the level of competition but I believe she will be very good by the time she leaves here. Lauren is exactly the kind of young lady we want in our program. She’s an excellent student and will be great with the community.”

Joining Roark was Woods, who, along with current Tide standout Stephanie VanBrakle, helped lead her summer league team to a second place finish at the 2003 ASA Gold Nationals tournament. In addition, she was named All-Division, All-City/County and All-Metro First Team her junior year (2003).
“Dani was the best power-hitting first baseman we saw this summer,” said Murphy. “She hit fourth in the lineup behind Steph (VanBrakle) for the Virginia Shamrocks. She will be our first lefty-lefty first baseman. Her power numbers are tremendous for a high school athlete.”
Roark and Woods join Chrissy Owens, who signed with the Crimson Tide last week, as the first freshmen for the 2005 season.
