Tide's Stephen Mitchell Advances at All-American Tourney

University of Alabama men’s tennis player Stephen Mitchell won his second round qualifying match Wednesday at the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mitchell, ranked No. 61 in the nation in singles, defeated Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky’s Evan Austin (No. 98) for his sixth consecutive win this season. The senior from Cape Town, South Africa moves on to face Boise State’s Thomas Schoeck., who is ranked No. 69 in singles rankings.
After beginning the season with a loss in Charlottesville, Va., Mitchell has reeled off six consecutive wins this fall. Mitchell’s Thursday match will mark the 3rd consecutive ranked opponent he has faced. Indiana’s Ryan Recht, who Mitchell defeated Tuesday, is ranked No. 93.
Tide senior Chris Gostek also begins play in the tournament Thursday. Gostek, ranked 52nd in singles, earned a spot in the main draw of the All-American.
