University of Alabama senior Stephen Mitchell opened play in the nation's largest collegiate tennis tournament Tuesday with a singles win in the round of 64 of the tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn over Indiana's Ryan Recht, 7-5, 6-2.
Mitchell also partnered with Alabama teammate Chris Gostek in doubles, playing Georgia Tech's Scott Schnugg and Jose Luis Muguruza in the round of 32. The match went to the wire, but the Georgia Tech squad held on in the end for a 9-8 victory.
It was a good match," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "We definitely felt like we should have won it. We were up a break twice and gave it back, then lost in a tiebreaker, but they played well."
Gostek will play in the main draw of the event beginning on Thursday, while Mitchell will play Kentucky's Evan Austin on Wednesday.
