TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama women’s basketball team was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for the 2002-03 academic year.
The award, which is presented annually to the top basketball programs in each NCAA Division for work in the classroom each season, was announced by the WBCA office on Tuesday. The Crimson Tide finished the 2002-03 academic year with an impressive 3.228 cumulative GPA including nine of the squad’s 13 players posting grade points of 3.0 or higher for the year.
The Tide’s classroom success included a pair of perfect semester performances with sophomore Katie Sipe earning a 4.0 last fall and senior Shun Hunter, who graduated in May, posting a 4.0 in her final undergraduate semester this past spring. Sipe led the team with a 3.928 GPA for the year.
“I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication shown by the player’s on the team in the classroom last year,” said UA head coach Rick Moody. “It is a tribute to their commitment and a true reflection of the type of student-athletes that are a part of this program. I have challenged all of our players to continue this commitment to excellence in the coming years.”
Alabama was the only Southeastern Conference women’s basketball program to garner the prestigious honor for 2002-03.
