TUSCALOOSA, ALA -- The Alabama Gymnastics team released its 2004 schedule this week with a message for its fans - Friday nights in Coleman Coliseum are made for families.
"We are introducing 'Fun Family Fridays' this year," head coach Sarah Patterson said. "All our home meets will be on Friday night, giving families an opportunity to do something together that is exciting and affordable."
The Crimson Tide has five home meets this season and four regular season road trips. Season ticket packages are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) or online at www.rolltide.com.
Patterson and company get things started with a bang Jan. 9th at 7 p.m. when Alabama once again hosts the nation's premiere regular season event, the Super Six Challenge. The event, in its fifth year, features conference rivals Florida and Georgia in addition to Denver, Oregon State and Oklahoma.
The Tide's remaining home schedule is made up of three traditional power houses and one hot newcomer. Penn State (Jan. 16), Florida (Jan. 30), Georgia (Feb. 20) and second year program Arkansas (Feb. 27) all make the trip to Tuscaloosa to face the Crimson Tide. All dual meets this season will start at 7:30 p.m.
"We've moved the start of our dual meets to 7:30 p.m. so that our fans from outside of Tuscaloosa will have an easier time getting here," Patterson said.
Three of Alabama's five home meets will be televised. The Super Six Challenge and the meet against Florida will be on ESPN2 while the Tide's annual clash with Georgia will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net.
The Tide's road slate is no easier than its home schedule. Alabama faces conference foes LSU (Jan. 23), Auburn (Feb. 6) and Kentucky (Feb. 13) on the road and finishes off the regular season at Michigan (March 12).
The postseason opens up March 20 with the Southeastern Conference Championships in Duluth, Ga. at the Gwinnett County Arena, following three years in Birmingham. The NCAA Regional Championships will find Alabama at one of six regional sites from Baton Rouge, La. to Corvallis, Oregon on April 3.
The NCAA Championships will be hosted by the defending national champion UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles April 15-17. It will mark the third time the Bruins have hosted the championships.
While the season doesn't start until January, Alabama will see its first competitive situation this Friday at the annual Ghost and Goblins intrasquad. The 16-athlete roster will be divided into two squads. Individuals will earn points for their respective squads by completing predetermined elements of their routines. The intrasquad will be held in the Tide's practice facility, located at the rear of Coleman Coliseum, with the fun getting underway just after 1:30 p.m.
