TIDE OPENS UP SEC PLAY AT KENTUCKY
The Alabama women's basketball team concludes its month-long stretch away from home with their Southeastern Conference opener on Sunday at Kentucky. The game is the final game in a six-game run of road contests for Bama. The Tide finally returns home on Thursday (Jan. 16) to open up their home SEC slate against No. 5 Tennessee. The UA-UK game is being televised live by Fox Sports Net with Dave Neal (play-by-play) and Van Chancellor (color) serving as the broadcast team.
ALABAMA SLUGGISH IN LEAGUE DEBUTS
As the Tide prepares for its 14th season of SEC play, Alabama hopes to improve on one of its few disappointments... slow starts in league play. UA is just 3-10 all-time in their SEC openers including a current five-game losing skid that was extended last season by Kentucky 63-62 on Jan. 6, 2002. Bama is slightly better in SEC home openers owning a 5-8 mark.
BAMA-UK SERIES NOTEBOOK
*This is the 27th meeting between the Tide and Wildcats. The pair have met each season since 1978 except in 1981 & 1985. (see p.5 for series game listing)
*Bama's Beth Vice is a former "Miss Basketball" in Kentucky (1998). Today marks her final appearance in her home state. UK's Stephanie Stumbo prepped at Hoover High School in Birmingham, Ala.
*UA holds a slight 14-12 series edge following last year's win in Lexington to snap a three-game win streak for the Cats.
*UK owns a 4-3 lead over the last 5 years. In that stretch neither team has won by more than a 7-point margin and a pair has been decided by a single point.
TUBE TIME FOR CRIMSON TIDE
The UK games marks the first of back-to-back TV games for Alabama. UA's game vs Tennessee will be broadcast by Comcast Sports South. Alabama upset No. 24 BYU on Dec. 21 on their only other TV appearance of the season.
