The No. 22 ranked (USCCCA) University of Alabama men’s cross country team will open the 2002 season on Friday when the team travels to Nashville, Tennessee to participate in the Belmont Opener.
“I really look forward to seeing the team in a competitive setting,” said Alabama men’s cross country coach Joe Walker. “They’ve looked good in practice leading up to this weekend, but now they’ll get a chance to get that racing mindset back.”
The Tide will line up against the likes of Austin Peay, Belmont, Bevill State CC, Evansville, Lipscomb, North Alabama, Southern Indiana, Tennessee State, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.
“We’ll lineup seven guys with the intent of having five of them finish,” said Walker. “We have some guys getting over some little, nagging injuries right now so they might treat it like a workout.”
The Belmont race marks the first time in three years, the Tide has not opened its season in New Orleans at the Tulane Invitational.
