LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team carded a second round 325 and moved up to 11th-place at the season-opening Lady Kat Invitational but heavy rains halted play on Sunday before the 16-team field could complete the final round.
The Tide, who was making a move in the final round through nine holes, finished the tournament with a two-day total of 646. Senior Jenny Bouvin, playing as an individual in the event, was one-under-par when the rains came but still finished in eighth-place at 149 (73-76) for her first career Top 10 showing.
“We struggled the first two rounds but we had gotten things turned around on Sunday,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We were playing so much better before the rains came. I think we can definitely build on our performance in the final round.”
While Bouvin’s play was a definite bright spot for the Tide, the play of true freshman Carina Sorensen was also a highlight as the rookie from Sweden debuted with an impressive 25th-place finish at 157 (76-81).
Other golfers competing for the Crimson Tide at the Lady Kat Invitational included Mandy Tedder at 160 (84-76), Darby Sligh with a 161 (79-82), Allison Akin at 168 (82-86) and Anna Strandberg at 172 (86-86).
Tennessee captured the 36-hole event with a score of 604 with South Florida (612), Mississippi State and Kentucky-Blue (614) and Penn State (619) rounding out the top five. Miami was sixth at 621 followed by Louisville (623), Arkansas (630), Maryland (639), Illinois State (640), Alabama (646), Ole Miss (649), CS-Northridge (652), Kentucky-White (666), Northern Kentucky and Richmond (679).
Lady Vol individual golfer Violeta Retamoza won the medalist honors with an two-day even par score of 144 (70-74).
The Crimson Tide has a few weeks off to prepare for their next competition on Sept. 27-29 at the ACC/SEC Shootout in Sandestin, Fla.
