TUSCALOOSA, ALA - At the 15th running of the Alabama hosted Crimson Classic cross country meet, the Crimson Tide men's team took its second straight team and individual championship of the season.
Alabama dominated the men's race, scoring a perfect 15 points by sweeping the first five spots, adding this win to the Belmont Opener title they won during the season's first week.
"It was really exciting to see the guys react when they saw the opportunity develop," Alabama cross country coach Joe Walker said of his team's sweep of the top-5 places. "They really pulled together at that point and made it happen."
Walker also noted that this was the first Tide race that had gone much as he had drawn it up.
"We planned to take the race out easy to the first mile and then try and have everyone in the top-10 by the two-mile point, from that point we just kept moving up," Walker said.
Senior Peter Kiprono, who opened the season with a win a the Belmont, posted a 25 minute 13.62 second finish over the 8-kilometer course to win the men's race, finishing nearly a minute better than freshman Peter Etoot's 26:02.47 second place effort.
"Peter (Kiprono) is healthy right now and he's really taking advantage of being our top runner right now," Walker said. "It will make just that much better when we have David (Kimani) back in mix."
David Kimani, Alabama's All-American senior who battled injury last season, will return to action at midseason.
Sophomore Kevin McDonough took third in the race with a 26:03.87 while senior Todd Fayant took fourth and freshman Tyler Stanfield took fifth at 26:09.16 and 26:20.42 respectively.
Auburn finished a distant second to Alabama's men, scoring 47 points. Tiger freshman Andrew Heath was the highest non-Crimson Tide finisher, posting a 26:26.20 good for sixth place.
Alabama's men race again Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Indiana State Invitational held in Terre Haute, Ind.
