Only a few days removed from his first cross country championship as a member of the Crimson Tide, Peter Kiprono was honored by the Southeastern Conference being named the SEC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
“This is a big deal for Peter. He’ll be thrilled,” said Alabama men’s cross country coach Joe Walker. “I remember two years, Chris Mutai got an opportunity to get out and run while David (Kimani) was taking some time off and he ran a lot better when David returned. That’s what we’re hoping will happen for Peter.”
Kiprono posted a first place finish at the Belmont Opener with a time of 15:46.43. His victory helped the Tide claim its third straight season opening meet championship.
“It was a good early season opportunity for Peter, to go into the race as the favorite,” said Walker.
Kiprono and the Tide will return to action on Friday, September 20 when Alabama hosts the 2002 Crimson Classic.
