The University of Alabama’s Wesley Pate is spending his summer working on his golf game. On Sunday, July 7, Pate, who’ll be a senior on the Crimson Tide golf team next season, won the Spirit of America tournament at Decatur’s Burningtree Country Club.
It bettered Pate’s 2000 Spirit of America finish where he’d finished second overall in the tournament and teamed with his Alabama teammate Austin Hynson for the 2000 collegiate championship. Sunday’s trophy will go along with Pate’s other recent tournament victories which include the 1998 Future Masters championship and the 1999 American Junior Golfer Association Texas San Antonio Shootout.
Pate, son of PGA and former Crimson Tide golfer Jerry Pate, won the 2002 Spirit of America title by two strokes, shooting 66-67-72/205 for an eight under par finish. He was tied for the lead at seven under par going into the 15th hole on Sunday before he pulled out ahead, making an 18-foot putt for birdie to go up by two strokes on that 15th hole. He putted for birdie again on the 16th hole, two putted for par on 17 but bogeyed on the 18th hole to take the two-shot win.
