COLLEGE STATION, TX -- University of Alabama junior Maxim Belski advanced to the second round of the 2002 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships, being held at College Station, Texas, as he upset No. 31 ranked (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Jeremy Wurtzman of Ohio State in straight sets, 6-1 6-3.
“Max played really well today,” said Alabama Head Coach Adam Steinberg. “Earlier in the season he lost to the same player, but today he came out and played a real emotional match.”
The victory by Belski, who ranks No. 57 according to the ITA, marks the first time in five years that a member of the Tide tennis team has advanced to the second round.
The junior is making his third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and his second consecutive appearance in the singles championships. He participated in the 2000 NCAA Championships in the doubles bracket.
Belski’s second round opponent will be No. 5 seed and fourth ranked Al Garland of Pepperdine. The match is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. CT.
