BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Alabama women’s golf squad carded an opening round 308 on Thursday in NCAA East Regional play at the par 72, 6,506-yard LSU University Club golf course.
Senior Sarah Johnston, a native of Benton, La., enjoyed her return to her home state posting a first round two-over-par 74 to pace the Crimson Tide lineup. Freshman Darby Sligh also had a solid round on Thursday finishing with a score of 76.
“We did some good things today,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “The thing that cost us was the fact that we had too many big scores on a few holes. We can put up some low numbers on this course we just have to do a better job of managing the course the next two days.”
In addition to Johnston and Sligh, the Tide’s first day scores included Anna Strandberg with a 78, Mandy Tedder at 80 and Erica Boozman with an 82.
The University of Florida carded a two-under-par 286 to take the early lead in the team competition. Auburn is in second-place at 287 followed by South Florida (289), Duke (291), Wake Forest (293), North Carolina (294), Vanderbilt (296), LSU (297), South Carolina and Furman (298), Memphis (299), Tulane and Georgia (300), Tennessee and North Carolina State (303), Central Florida (305), Texas A&M (306), Mississippi State (307), Alabama, Yale (316) and Jackson State (335).
