SEA ISLAND, GA. - After playing the first 14 holes with scores that were figuring to place it among the top four, the last four holes wreaked havoc on the University of Alabama's golfers. By the day's end, they were in 11th place after day one of the 2002 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships.
"Disappointment is an understatement," said Crimson Tide head coach Dick Spybey. "Actually, shock is a better word for the feeling we have right now. We were cruising along pretty well through 14 holes and then on the last four holes we played a total of 18 over par which is unheard of for a team like ours. It seemed like every bad break that could have happened happened. We went from third or fourth place to 11th pretty quick.
"The good news is the guys had a great year thus far. If they can just play normal golf tomorrow (Saturday), they should move up the ladder. Our goal now is to place as high as we can and get ourselves in better chance for Sunday's final round."
Florida is in first place at 284 on the par 70 Seaside Golf Course. Auburn is second (285), followed by Arkansas (290), LSU (292), Vanderbilt (294), Tennessee and Kentucky (296), Georgia and Ole Miss (298), South Carolina (302), Alabama (305) and Mississippi State (306).
Alabama's five golfers finishes after Friday's first round find a bright in Jan Are Larsen's position. He's tied at 12th after shooting 72. Clint Provost is tied for 32nd after shooting 75. Nick Rousey, tied at 46th, shot 78. Lars Brovold shot 80 and is tied at 52nd and Wesley Pate is tied at 59th after shooting 84.
