Powered by three golfers who finished among the top 16 individuals, the University of Alabama collected its fourth top five finish of the 2002 season at the Matlock Invitational, a two-day tournament held at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Fla.
Tulsa bested the field of 15 teams, shooting 291-287-295/873 to win the team championship. Virginia Tech was second (875), Colorado third (878), the University of Alabama fourth (295-294-291/880), followed by Missouri (883), host Florida Southern (891), Campbell (898), Miami of Ohio (902), North Carolina-Wilmington (904), Kentucky (904), Old Dominion (906), Richmond (912), Mississippi State (915), Valdosta State (945), and West Florida (955).
Jan Are Larsen led the Alabama charge, finishing in a tie for 11th by shooting one under in the third round (75-73-71/219). A shot back and tied at 13th was his teammate, Lars Brovold, who shot 72-71-77/220. Bama freshman Clint Provost finished tied at 16th (74-75-72/221). Austin Hynson shot 74-80-72/226 to finish tied at 31st, and Nick Rouse shot 82-75-76/233 to finish tied at 48th.
Florida Southern’s Steve Sokol finished six under par (72-67-71/210) to win the individual championship.
