BATON ROUGE, La.-- The Alabama women’s golf squad shot a disappointing 312 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional on Friday to remain in 19th-place at the postseason event.
Senior Sarah Johnston, a native of Benton, La., continued her solid play in her home state recording her second consecutive round of 74 to pace the Crimson Tide lineup. Johnston, an All-SEC and All-American performer, has a two-day score of 148 and sits in a tie for 29th-place in the individual competition heading into final round action.
“We again struggled with some big numbers on a few holes,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “The last few holes were really costly for us today. It is disappointing to me after how well we played this season to get here. Tomorrow we just have to regroup and play for pride. With a good round, Sarah (Johnston) has a chance to continue on into the NCAA Championship field.”
Bama sophomores Anna Strandberg and Mandy Tedder posted matching scores of 79 on Friday followed by Erica Boozman with an 80 and Darby Sligh at 83 to round out the UA lineup.
Top ranked Duke leads the team competition at 571 following an eight-under-par 280 on Friday. TheBlue Devils own a five-shot lead over first round leader Florida (576). Auburn is in third at 580 followed by Wake Forest (581), South Florida (585), South Carolina (591), Vanderbilt (592), Furman, Georgia and Tulane (595), Memphis (596), LSU (597), North Carolina and Texas A&M (605), North Carolina State (606), Mississippi State, Tennessee and Central Florida (609), Alabama (620), Yale (640) and Jackson State (655).
Tournament play at the NCAA Regional concludes with a final round on Saturday. The top eight teams and the top two individual finishers not on one of those squads will earn invitations to the NCAA Championship Tournament at the end of May in Auburn, Wash.
