The University of Alabama women’s tennis team will take on Mississippi in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Columbia, South Carolina, on Thursday at 10: 00 a.m. EDT. The Rebels enter the tournament as the eighth seed while the Crimson Tide is the ninth seed.
Ole Miss is currently ranked 35th in the nation and finished the regular season 11-9, 4-7 in the SEC. The Rebels’ Mira Radu is ranked 12th in the singles rankings and Alesya Ignatieva is ranked 57th. Alabama (12-9, 3-8) is currently ranked 42nd in the collegiate tennis rankings. New rankings will be released on Wednesday.
Mississippi defeated Alabama earlier in the season by the slimmest of margins, 4-3. The match was tied at 3-3 and came down to the last singles match which went into three sets. This marks the second year in a row that Alabama has faced Mississippi in opening round of the SEC Tournament. Last year, the Crimson Tide won 4-1 over the Rebels in Starkville.
“We played Mississippi very competitively last time,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “I believe the team will be up and ready. We have a lot to play for.”
“This is the most important part of our season. This is where we crank it up a notch with nothing to lose.”
The winner of the Mississippi and Alabama match will advance to take on number one seeded Georgia in the quarterfinals on Friday at 10:00 a.m. EDT.
