TUSCALOOSA-- The University of Alabama women’s basketball team and its booster club, The Fastbreakers, held their annual postseason awards reception on Thursday night at the Country Club of Tuscaloosa.
Alabama, who finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 19-12 record, celebrated a year that saw the Tide make its 11th consecutive postseason appearance and post a 13th straight winning record. UA head coach Rick Moody was also honored for becoming the all-time winningest basketball coach in school history with 272 victories.
“This was one of our more successful seasons in recent history,” said Moody. “We accomplished many of our team goals and even overcame the disappointment of being left out of the NCAA Tournament with a strong showing in the WNIT. We improved as a team throughout the year and that’s really all you can ask your players to do.”
The reception featured a light meal and included the presentation of season recognition awards to all the players. Several players were also recognized with special team awards. Seniors Shondra Johnson and LaNisha Cartwell were elected the permanent team captains for the season while junior Shun Hunter earned the Most Improved Player award. Other award winners included sophomore Mary Kathryn “Capper” Reed, who won the Shelly Pyles Hustle Award, and junior Beth Vice captured the Dottie Kelso Inspiration Award.
Vice was also recognized for an honor she received earlier in the week at the UA Office of Community Service and Volunteerism awards banquet. The native of Mt. Sterling, Ky., was given the “Best Performance in Athletics Award” for her numerous hours and projects of community service.
In addition to the award presentation, reception attendees were treated to a brief recap of the season by Moody along with a highlight video presentation.
