Tide Falls to Auburn in Regular Season Finale

The University of Alabama women’s tennis team lost 4-2 on Sunday at No. 33 Auburn. No. 42 Alabama finishes the regular season 12-9 overall and 3-8 in the SEC.
The Crimson Tide claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. At number one doubles, Bama’s Millie Begovic and Weyli Chang won 8-2 over Auburn’s 48th ranked doubles team of Carolina Maurer and Katia Illarionova. Alabama’s Becca Baum and Stefanie Leung won 8-5 at number three doubles over Auburn’s Liz Sauerborn and Sarah Suitor. The number two doubles match, the Crimson Tide’s Selia Mathew and Jenny Ketchum versus the Tigers’ Carolina Ramirez and Petra Bercik, was stopped as Alabama had already clinched the doubles point.
Auburn then won four of the six singles matches for the 4-2 victory. Bama’s Mathew gave Alabama its lone singles win at number one singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Auburn’s Illarionova. At number two singles, Auburn’s Bercik defeated Alabama’s Ketchum 6-4, 6-4. The Tigers’ Ramirez won 6-4, 6-1 over the Crimson Tide’s Begovic at number three singles. At number four singles, Auburn’s Maurer won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Alabama’s Chang. Auburn’s Sauerborn defeated Bama’s Baum 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at number five position. The Tide’s Leung and the Tigers’ Martina Janska split sets before their match was stopped.
“Auburn played hard and fought for it,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “We just did not have enough today. We needed to pull through in some situations and just couldn’t do it.”
Alabama will next compete in the SEC Tournament in Columbia, South Carolina, from April 18-21. The NCAA Regionals will be held from May 10-12.
