The University of Alabama women’s tennis team won two singles and two doubles flights on Sunday at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island.
“It was a positive experience and a very productive tournament,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “We got some match play versus teams in a region that we never get to see.”
Sophie Cremers defeated teammate Marie-France Lord-Andrade in the singles flight “A” final 6-2, 6-4. Singles flight “B” also featured two Crimson Tide players as Ashley Bentley won 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 over Nathalie Koppelle.
Melissa Minor lost in the flight “C” finals to Alana Marcu of Boston University 3-6, 6-3, 11-9. Bama’s Natalie McElveen won the flight “C” consolation final over Jessica Engel of Boston College 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, Alabama also won two flights. Koppelle and Bentley won flight “B” doubles with a 8-3 win over Harvard’s Ashley Hyotte and Lola Ajilore. Minor and Lord-Andrade won doubles flight “C” as they won 8-3 defeating Jessica Engel and Amy Molden of Boston College. Cremers and McElveen took third place in flight “A” doubles with an 8-1 win over Boston University’s Lindsey Kynof and Elena de Mendoza. Julie Ferguson lost 8-3 in the finals of doubles flight “D” playing with Mariana Lee of Brown.
“We played a lot of third set tie-breakers that helped us with mental toughness,” Mainz said. “The tournament also allowed us to identify things we need to work on.”
Not only did the Crimson Tide win two singles and two doubles flights, they also won the Alexis Boss Sportsmanship Award.
“I was very impressed,” Mainz said. “I thought the girls did a good job of representing Alabama.”
Millie Begovic and Robin Stephenson begin doubles play in the qualifying round of the Riviera All American on Tuesday. They are currently ranked No. 39 in the collegiate doubles rankings.
