Alabama's Stephen Mitchell and Geoff Hiscox won the doubles draw in the South region of the Omni Hotels National Indoor Tennis Championship in Lexington, Ky. on Monday.
Mitchell and Hiscox, unranked in the preseason polls by the Intercolligant Tennis Association, defeated 29th ranked Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker of Memphis 8-5 in the final round.
"The Final was a great classic doubles match," Senior Geoff Hiscox said after the victory. "I knew we would do well, and I told Stephen before this that I knew we could win."
The doubles draw consisted of 64 tandems from 29 different schools. The South is one of eight regions represented in the National Indoor Championship. Alabama assistant coach Mario Rincon will take Mitchell and Hiscox to Dallas to compete for the National Championship on November 7. They are one of the eight teams remaining in the nation.
"This feels good," Junior Stephen Mitchell said on his way back to Tuscaloosa. "They (Stapp/Walker) were a really good team. I knew as long as we could put it together we could win."
Two other doubles teams also had an impressive weekend for the Crimson Tide, only loosing to Stapp and Walker, the same pair from Memphis that reached the final. William Boyles and Chris Gostek were defeated in the second round while Max Belski and Brad Friedman were defeated in the quarterfinals.
"It was a good effort all around for doubles," Alabama Head Coach Billy Pate said. "Anybody in our lineup is capable of breaking through. This is the toughest region in the country and I am very proud of these guys."
In the singles draw, Mitchell made it to the third round and Max Belski was defeated in the second round.
This marks the final tournament of the fall season for Alabama. The dual season begins on January 26, 2003 in Tuscaloosa versus Troy State.
