TUSCALOOSA, AL -- In front of a crowd of nearly 100 fans, the Alabama Gymnastics team held its annual Ghost and Goblin’s inter-squad today in their Coleman Coliseum practice facility.
The annual affair found the Crimson Tide split into two squads and competing skills and parts of routines for a predetermined amount of points. Because each gymnast has a different amount of points they can score, the meet was scored by percentages.
The weather outside was conducive to the “Halloween” themed event, with overcast, damp and chilly weather predominating, but the mood inside the gym was upbeat and excited as the Tide’s seven freshmen got their first taste of collegiate competition.
“We were very pleased with what we saw today,” assistant head coach David Patterson said. “We’ve still got a long way to got, but we’re pleased with the progress. The freshmen are starting to learn what it’s all about.”
Both teams looked sharp with the Ghosts edging the Goblins by the slimmest of margins, 89.01-89.00. The Ghosts were led by the top-two point scores in freshman Ashley Miles and senior Kristin Sterner. The Goblins were led by four athletes, juniors Jeana Rice and Lauren Holdefer along with sophomores Shannon Hrozek and Michelle Reeser, who tied for third place in the individual competition.
“We saw lots of good things today,” David Patterson said. “Several people, because they were gearing up for this weekend, made big strides in practice this week.”
The Tide’s next event will be the Medalist Club BBQ Sunday, November 10 starting at 4 p.m. in the Scholarship Room at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The BBQ is an opportunity for members of the Tide’s booster organization, the Medalist Club, to meet the 2003 team. Fans can join the Medalist Club at the door and the cost of the BBQ is $8.50 per person. This year's fest will be catered by Cottondale's The Pottery Grill.
