For the second time this season, the University of Alabama men’s cross country team has been honored with the SEC Athlete of the Week, with senior All-American David Kimani receiving the honors this time.
Kimani made his season debut over the weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the Chili Pepper Invitational and he made his presence known immediately winning the meet championship with a time of 28:42.87 which was more than four seconds faster than his closest competitor.
With the victory, Kimani has now placed first in six of his last eight races at Alabama dating back to his sophomore season. His first place finished also helped the Tide to a third place team finish in the meet.
“The award for David was well deserved,” said cross country coach Joe Walker. “I’m happy for him as he has put in a lot of work and effort to get to this level. The competitors from Arkansas that he faced this past weekend are some of the better athletes in the country and he was able to rise to the challenge and come out on top.”
The honor is Kimani’s fourth career SEC Athlete of the Week honor, having twice been named SEC Indoor Track athlete of the week and twice being named SEC Cross Country athlete of the week.
Senior Peter Kiprono won the award earlier in the season for the Tide.
Kimani and the Tide will return to action on November 4 in Gainesville, Florida at the 2003 SEC Cross Country Championships.
