TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama football program is among seven recipients of the 2017 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Academic Achievement Award, the association announced Thursday. The award is the first for Alabama.
Alabama is one of seven programs that recorded a 100-percent graduation rate for members of its 2010 freshman football class. Joining the Tide this year are Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Northwestern, Utah, Utah State and Virginia.
The Academic Achievement Award is presented annually to the school or schools with the highest score in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and a federal graduation rate of 75 percent or higher.
The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees.Â
The Academic Achievement Award was created by the College Football Association (CFA) in 1981 and presented by that organization until its dissolution in 1997. The AFCA has presented the award since 1998.
