Alabama Men’s Tennis Q&A: Edson Ortiz

RollTide.com will be posting Q&A's of each member on this year's Alabama men's tennis team so fans can get to know the members of our Crimson Tide family. The third Q&A is with Edson Ortiz, a skilled freshman from Chihuahua, Mexico, who is studying human performance exercise science. Ortiz leads the team for the most singles wins since beginning dual match play with six total victories. The gifted freshman has an impressive 5-1 mark from the No. 5 singles position, and he is 1-1 from the No. 4 singles spot.
Q: What was your first visit to campus like?
A: It was a really good experience. I was amazed by the campus and I loved the team.
Q: What surprised you most about Alabama?
A: Campus, I immediate fell in love with the place.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your hometown?
A: FOOD! There is nothing like tacos and Mom's cooking.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Tuscaloosa?
A: Dreamland. I went there my very first day and it was beyond delicious.
Q: What is your favorite tennis memory?
A: When I played in the Junior Davis Cup for Mexico in 2014. Playing for my country was an unbelievable experience.
Q: Who inspired you most in tennis?
A: My family. They are my #1 fans, and no matter what happens they will always support me.
Q: When did playing tennis in college become a goal for you?
A: I didn't know much about college tennis until the beginning of 2015, since the, college tennis was always on my mind.
Q: What song pumps you up to play?
A: Song 2 by Blur! It is played on our courts before we play a match and it gets me really pumped.
Q: What is your favorite movie made before you were born?
A: Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Pulp Fiction!
Q: What is your dream job?
A: I haven't thought about this yet.
Q: If you could live in a book, which book would you live in?
A: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
Q: What is your favorite hobby outside of tennis?
A: Music. People probably see me most of the time with my headphones.
Q: If you could meet any person in the world who would it be?
A: Roger Federer!
Q: If you were playing a pro circuit what grand slam would you want to win most?
A: French Open. I love clay courts it is my favorite surface.
Q: What do you like to hear from fans when they are cheering for you?
A: LET'S GO EDI!!!
Q: What are some goals you look to achieve this spring season?
A: Keeping myself health and without an injuries so I can give the team the best version of me during matches.
Q: If you weren't playing tennis what sport would you play?
A: Soccer or Basketball.
Q: Who would win an arm wrestling competition on the team?
A: Thibault, no doubt.
Q: What is your favorite holiday?
A: Christmas! Is there something else better than tons of food and presents.
Q: If you could give one message to your fans what would it be?
A: Keep cheering for us the way you do, you guys are awesome! Be ready because we have great things ahead of us, and this has just started! Roll Tide!!
