The Battle Plan

Several Teams in the Hunt for Titles as Spring Arrives
We have four teams that are in the hunt for national championships this spring, and others that are likely to contend for high national team finishes. With SEC and national championships already housed in Tuscaloosa this year by our football team, we could be in for another outstanding year. Our gymnastics, softball, men's golf and women's golf teams all have legitimate chances to compete for championships. Winning championships takes some good fortune with injuries and close calls but, at this stage of the season, these teams and individuals in other sports have legitimate chances.
Our gymnastics team came in second in the recent SEC Championships, missing a tie by .025 points, the lowest margin possible. In doing so, our team earned its highest score of the season. They are primed and ready for the postseason and will host NCAA Regionals on April 2. Our gymnastics and football programs have shown that sometimes it's easier to win national championships than SEC titles. This year's team has been interesting to watch as they have maneuvered through the season. They haven't won all their meets, but they have performed well in some events at every meet. It seems to me that we have found the right combination as the season has progressed and that Coach Duckworth has our ladies peaking at the right time. So, let's fill up Coleman Coliseum next Saturday and cheer this 2016 team on to victory in the regionals to send them off to nationals with a bang.
NCAA Champions in Track & Field and Swimming
Our women's track & field and men's swimming & diving teams both produced national champions over the last two weeks!
On March 11 in Birmingham, junior long jumper Quanesha Burks won the women's long jump title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. On her final attempt of the event, Quanesha leaped 22 feet, 3 3/4 inches to break her own school record along with the facility record. She is now tied for No. 6 on the all-time collegiate list in the women's indoor long jump. As you may recall, this is Quanesha's second NCAA long jump title. She also took the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships title last June in Eugene, Oregon. A native of Hartselle, Alabama, Quanesha is only the seventh female track athlete in our history to win a national title at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Her victory marked our first at the national indoor meet for the Crimson Tide women in a field event since 1989.
Last night in Atlanta, our men's swimming and diving team's 200 medley relay broke the school record on the way to winning Alabama's first NCAA relay title in program history with a time of one minute, 22.28 seconds, just a hundredth of a second off the NCAA record. Juniors Connor Oslin and Pavel Romanov combined with sophomore Luke Kaliszak and junior Kristian Gkolomeev to defeat California and Texas for the victory. Kristian posted the fastest relay split in school history over the last 50 (going 18 seconds flat!) to secure the win, more than two-tenths of a second ahead of Cal. Congratulations to our student-athletes and their coaches, Dan Waters and Dennis Pursley, as well as their respective staffs.
Spring Football Gets Going
Spring football practice is well underway. It is an exciting time, as new coaches and new players are all working to find the best combinations for next fall. Coach Saban has talked about the difficulty of losing about 25 percent of our team each year, with not only the departure of seniors, but several juniors as well. Those guys provided talent and leadership for last year's team, but their departure provides opportunities for our younger players to step up and find a way to contribute. There is a lot of talent on this team, and it will be an interesting journey as each day of spring practice, summer conditioning work, and fall practice will determine who will rise to the top at each position. From my own coaching experience, I can tell you that there are always surprises in how players progress over the summer. While we always hope that the surprises are pleasant, that is not always the case. Our staff has always done a great job of teaching a lot of players to play, and to cross train many in playing more than one position, in case of injuries down the road. Depth is very important as we prepare for the 2016 season and our opening game with Southern Cal in Arlington. There is a lot of work to be done, but I can't think of anyone better to lead our team than Coach Saban and his staff.
Reflections on the Basketball Season
Basketball season has ended but I am very pleased with the work that both Avery Johnson and Kristy Curry have done with our men's and women's programs. We still have a sizable talent gap between us and the top of the league, but I believe we have outstanding leadership in both programs. Attracting top talent is important for both programs. The SEC is a difficult place to play in every sport, but I like what we have done so far and this year's recruiting class is still a work in progress. There is a great deal of optimism that we are headed in the right direction and will be competing for championships in the next few years.
Baseball Playing Well Entering Second Weekend of SEC Play
Our baseball team overcame a first inning 3-0 deficit against Tennessee last night to earn a 7-3 victory to take our SEC record to 3-1. We are hovering around the top 25 mark in the rankings and it was awesome to see a sellout crowd at The Joe last night with about 1,300 students in the right field zone. The students make a big difference in all our sports, but they are especially important in baseball, where clean razzing of the other team is a part of the game. I am very proud of the way our students behave in the zone and clean up after themselves. I enjoy getting out and visiting with the students and watching games with them. They really appreciate the special section built strictly for them. And I can honestly tell them that no one appreciates them and the energy they bring to the games more than our players, coaches, players' parents, and myself. The new stadium continues to bring smiles and rave reviews, and there are still great premium seats available in both zones as well as a skybox.
Fulfilling the Mission: Postgraduate Scholarships & SEC Scholar-Athlete Award Winners
The academic honors continue to roll in for the Crimson Tide. The fall NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners were announced earlier this week and Alabama had two women - track and field/cross country runner Katelyn Greenleaf and volleyball player Sierra Wilson - earn the prestigious scholarship. Alabama and Stanford were the only two schools to earn more than one of the women's fall scholarships. Over the last two and a half years, Alabama student-athletes have earned an amazing 11 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, and we have several more vying for scholarships in the winter and spring sport categories. On the conference level, just a few days after helping her team to a second-place finish at the SEC Championships, senior Lauren Beers was named the SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year by a vote of the league coaches. With Lauren's honor, Alabama gymnasts have now won six SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in the 13-year history of the award. She joins Kim Jacob (2012, 2013 and 2014), Kayla Hoffman (2011) and Michelle Reeser (2005) since the award's inception in 2004. Lauren is also the fourth Alabama student-athlete to earn SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors for their respective sports during the current academic year, joining men's basketball's Retin Obasohan, football's Ryan Kelly and soccer's Abby Lutzenkirchen.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Investing In Champions
"Investing In Champions" is a phrase you have probably seen used very much by the Crimson Tide Foundation. "Investing In Champions" is so much more than a slogan or a tag-line to us, and I invite you to think for a moment about the tremendous opportunity that those words represent. Everything we do in the Athletics Department is centered on building champions and winning championships. These champions, while they have amazing athletic talent and work tirelessly to become their best, are also college students. It is up to our coaches and staff to develop each of them into the best athlete, student and individual that he or she can be. But there is another element to their success -- you. When you make a gift to the Crimson Tide Foundation in support of scholarships, buildings and facilities, operating/gift funds, you are making an investment in the development and future of these young men and women who give so much of themselves every day to become champions. Your support is paramount to the success of this department and each of our athletes. So, the next time you are watching any of our sporting events, take a moment to think about the athletes and the opportunity you have to invest in them, invest in their future, and invest in champions. Your support is needed and appreciated at every level. Building our endowed scholarship base for all sports and building reserves to keep facilities in championship condition are vital to our success over the next 25 years. You can learn more about ways you can make an investment in our athletes and programs at www.crimsontidefoundation.org.

Sports Updates
Baseball
Coach Mitch Gaspard's team is in the midst of a three-game SEC series with Tennessee at Sewell-Thomas Stadium that concludes with two games today, the first one at 2 p.m. CT and the last one at 8 p.m. CT. We opened the series last night with a 7-3 victory over the Vols. Last weekend, the Tide took a 2-1 series victory at seventh-ranked LSU, Alabama's first series win in Baton Rouge since 1996. Friday's game was a 6-0 shutout, the Crimson Tide's first shutout of the Tigers in Baton Rouge since May 14, 2000. Freshman Chandler Taylor was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance in the four games last week. In four games, Chandler collected four hits, three of which went for extra bases, including one double and his team-leading third and fourth home runs (both coming at LSU). He led the Tide in total bases with 11 and had a team-high slugging percentage of .733 in the four games. So far this season, Chandler has been key to the Tide offense, leading the team in home runs, total bases (32) and walks (9), while tying for second on the team in hits (17) and runs scored (10). The weather should be nice today, so head out to The Joe to support the Tide and check out our beautiful new facility!
Men's Basketball
Coach Avery Johnson's exciting first season as head coach came to an end on March 15 with a 72-54 loss at Creighton in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. The loss ended season with an 18-15 overall record. Avery's win total matched the record for the most wins by a first-year Alabama coach with Wimp Sanderson (1980-81). He also matched Wimp's SEC win mark by a first year head coach at Alabama (8). Alabama won four games vs. AP Top 25 teams this season, the first time since the 2001-02 season that an Alabama team has four victories over AP top-25 teams during the regular season. The Tide was one of just 15 teams in the nation to earn four wins over teams ranked in the AP Top 25 during the season. In the four years prior to this season (2011-15), the Tide was a combined 0-18 vs. Top 25 opponents. But the biggest improvement may have been off the court, as Alabama fans responded to the excitement surrounding the current state of the program. The Tide boasted five sellouts this year -- the most sellouts in a season since 2006-07 (6) -- and a record-setting turnout. Our average home attendance of 13,110 per home game shattered the school record for single-season average attendance by nearly 1,000 fans per game. The former record of 12,484 per game was set during the 2011-12 campaign. The future looks bright as this year's squad was one of the younger teams in the SEC. Of the 12 available players on the roster (Nick King and Avery Johnson, Jr. both sat out this year due to NCAA transfer rules), seven were either freshmen (4) or sophomores (3).
Men's Golf
Three Alabama golfers finished among the top 12 to lead the seventh-ranked Tide to the 2016 Linger Longer Invitational team championship earlier this week. Alabama finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a team score of 12-under par 852 (282-285-285), as the Tide claimed its fourth title in its last five tournaments dating back to the fall season. The victory was the fourth time in the last six years that Alabama has claimed the Linger Longer tournament title, also having won it in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Tide won by four strokes over No. 3 Georgia and No. 47 Augusta State, who tied for second overall with both teams carding a 9-under par 855 for the tournament. Virginia, ranked No. 22 in the nation, finished in fourth with an 861, while tournament host Kennesaw State rounded out the top five teams with an 866. Alabama had three players finish among the top 12 in the event, including a pair of top-10 finishers in junior Robby Shelton and freshman Davis Riley. Robby closed the final round with a 3-under par 69 to finish in 6th overall with a three-day total of 5-under par 211 (70-72-69), his fifth top-10 finish in six tournaments this season and the 22nd top-10 result in 30 career tournaments played. Davis also had a strong showing, finishing seventh overall with a 54-hole score of 4-under par 212 (70-71-71). It was his fourth top-10 finish in seven tournaments this season. The Tide returns to action tomorrow when the team travels to Sylacauga, Ala., to compete at the FarmLinks Collegiate Match Play event. Alabama will open the event against No. 10 Auburn in one semifinal, with the other semifinal pitting No. 6 Vanderbilt against No. 21 Georgia Tech in a match play format. The winners of each semifinal will then meet for the championship, with the other teams moving on to play for the consolation. The event, which is free to the public, will be played at the FarmLinks Golf Club at Pursell Farms.
Gymnastics
Coach Dana Duckworth and her team put together their best performance of the season at last weekend's SEC Championships in North Little Rock, Ark., scoring a 197.750. After such an amazing performance, it was heartbreaking to watch as Florida's last competitor scored a 9.875, just enough to slip past our ladies for the title, by .025, the smallest margin possible. The program's consistent level of excellence, year-in and year-out, is a point of pride for us. While we didn't win our third consecutive SEC title, this year's finish does mark the ninth consecutive year that we have finished either first or second at the SEC Championships. Overall, we have posted 27 top-two SEC finishes. Individually, junior Katie Bailey and sophomore Kiana Winston shared top honors on the uneven bars while sophomore Mackenzie Brannan won the SEC vault championship. The gymnasts are off from competition this weekend, but will host the most exciting meet of the season, the NCAA Regional Championship, on Saturday, April 2, at 4 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum. The regionals are the gateway to the NCAA Championships. Five teams -- California, Boise State, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Bowling Green -- will join Alabama vying for one of two spots available to the national championships from the Tuscaloosa regional. We hope you will all join us in cheering the Crimson Tide onto another NCAA Championship berth.
Rowing
The Tide competed in two separate competitions last weekend, with three boats traveling to Sacramento, Calif., for the Lake Natoma Regatta while the remaining members of the team competed against Drake on the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa. The Tide won seven of its nine races in California, including back-to-back victories by the First Varsity 8+ on Saturday against St. Mary's and Sacramento State. The wins marked the first time the First Varsity 8 won consecutive races on the road in program history. The 1V8+ couldn't complete the weekend sweep on Sunday over San Diego State, finishing second, though it posted its fastest time of the weekend in 6:27.3. The Second Varsity 8+ won all three of its races while the Varsity 4+ took two out of three. In Tuscaloosa, the Tide won all four races over Drake, with the First Varsity 8+ turning in the fastest time of the day in 7:22.6 over the 2,000-meter course.
Softball
The sixth-ranked Tide went 4-1 last week in Fullerton, Calif., at the Easton Tournament before returning home on Tuesday for an 8-0 shutout win over Alcorn State. As the program celebrates its 20th anniversary this season, the team enters play this weekend only five wins shy of the 1,000th win in program history, owning a 995-293 (.793) all-time record. The Tide earned its first win in its very first game on Feb. 15, 1997, against Tulsa and have averaged over 50 wins per season ever since then. The team will be celebrating Haylie McCleney's senior day on Saturday. Haylie is one of the most decorated players in program history, a three-time All-American and career leader in batting average and on-base percentage. She is also a two-time Academic All-American and was named the 2015 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-America Team Member of the Year for Division-I softball. This weekend, we host 15th-ranked Missouri for a three-game SEC series. The teams will play a doubleheader this afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. CT, with game two beginning approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. After taking Sunday off, game three will be played on Monday at 6 p.m. CT and will be televised live on The SEC Network.
Swimming & Diving
As I mentioned earlier in this blog, our men's 200 medley relay crushed the school record on the way to winning its first NCAA relay title in program history on Friday night. Earlier last night, junior Connor Oslin took silver in the 100 backstroke. Connor, a native of nearby Kennesaw, Ga., posted the best NCAA 100 backstroke finish by the Crimson Tide since Carolos Berrocal won the NCAA title in 1979. Sophomore Luke Kaliszak had a school record-setting swim in the morning to earn a place in the championship final of the 100 butterfly where he finished fifth. His school-record 45.18 in prelims crushed the previous Alabama mark by more than a second. With the championships concluding later today, the Tide is in seventh place with 143 points after the meet's third day. Coach Dennis Pursley and his staff have taken 14 swimmers and divers to the Men's NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., this week, including eight swimmers in individual events, four swimmers competing solely on relays, and two divers. It is our largest contingent in more than 25 years. After posting our first top 10 national finish since 1994 last season, our men are looking to rise into the top 10 this season, moving ever closer to challenging for an NCAA team title. By this point, the McAuley Aquatic Center on the Georgia Tech campus should be very familiar to our coaches. It was the site of last week's NCAA women's championships where our ladies finished 28th as a team, our highest finish since 2005. Five women earned All-America honors, the most since 2005. Our 400 medley relay of Caroline Korst, Bridget Blood, Hannah Musser and Emma Saunders, earned honorable mention All-America honors and became our first relay since 2005 to score at the NCAA meet. Bridget also scored in the 100 breaststroke while Mia Nonnenberg scored in the 400 individual medley, and both women earned honorable mention All-America in those events along the way. Our men's and women's swimming and diving programs continue to move up the ranks!
Men's Tennis
Alabama returns home for a pair of matches this weekend, hosting Auburn today at 5 p.m. and Florida on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tonight there will be a free cookout and seat cushion giveaway with men's basketball coach Avery Johnson on hand for our honorary first serve. Coach George Husack's young team is showing lots of improvement throughout the lineup and has been competitive in nearly every match this season against a tough schedule. Freshman Mazen Osama moved up to No. 43 in the singles rankings this week, while sophomore Korey Lovett stands at No. 102 in the nation. Together the duo jumped to No. 17 in doubles, after picking up a pair of top 25 wins last week against opponents from LSU and No. 9 Texas A&M.
Women's Tennis
Coach Jenny Mainz's team returned home this week after four consecutive road matches. On Thursday evening, the Crimson Tide battled against No. 39 Ole Miss but ended up on the losing end of a 5-2 decision. Freshman Andie Daniell got back to her winning ways after a couple of tough weeks, picking up her eighth victory this season over a ranked opponent by defeating the Rebels' Natalie Suk 6-3, 6-3. Andie is in a great position to make the NCAA Singles Championship in her first year at the Capstone, which would be a fantastic way to end her stellar rookie campaign. The team will be back in action on Saturday, hosting No. 27 Mississippi State at 1 p.m. CT.
Track & Field
Despite less than ideal weather, the 2016 John Mitchell Alabama Relays were a huge success yet again! I'd like to personally thank all of the teams that stuck it out and competed in this year's meet. While some events had to be cancelled, head coach Dan Waters and his staff, in conjunction with our tremendous event management staff, made sure the weekend went as smoothly as possible. As for the results, it was a great weekend for Alabama track & field as the Tide claimed five events, two in the field on the men's side and three on the track for the women. Junior Kyle Felpel successfully defended his shot put title, while senior Justin Fondren won the high jump in his final Alabama Relays. Junior sprinter Diamond Gause claimed the women's 100 meters in her outdoor debut as a member of the Crimson Tide. Senior Kimberley Ficenec (800 meters) and junior Vanessa Clerveaux (100-meter hurdles) also earned event victories for the Tide. Earlier this week, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its Preseason National Team Rankings for the outdoor season. The Alabama men are ranked No. 6 and the women checked in at No. 23, the highest preseason ranking in program history for both squads! The men's ranking is also the highest a Tide track & field team has ever been ranked at any point during an outdoor season. Both the men and the women are in action this weekend in Tallahassee, Fla., at the FSU Relays.
